Traffic Engineer ends “circle of death”

by Ahmad Al-Shehri (GUST student)

Ever since Muhammad Al-Rashidi had a family member die from a car accident because of the poor road conditions, his mission has been to improve the roads in Kuwait.

Accidents are very common in Kuwait. Muhammad started working as a civil engineer just 8 months ago and already has shown results. His work tackled the infamous “circle of death” roundabout in Ardiya and replaced it with a traffic light intersection that reduced accidents drastically. Also, Muhammad contributed in ending the stampede of cars that happens every afternoon in the 5th Ring Road exit to Ardiya by increasing the number of lanes from one to three. Sabah Al-Nasser used to have dirt roads so Muhammad pushed the date early to pave the roads and residents of the area were happy with the results.

Muhammad recommended many things to the Governate to help patients reach the hospital faster. He suggested that ambulances heading towards the Farwaniya Hospital get a device that can turn all traffic lights in their path to red. Allowing ambulances to reach the hospital faster can save lives.

The most frustrating thing to Muhammad is that he is limited in working with roads in the Farwaniya Governate only and not all of Kuwait.

Muhammad has did many things to help traffic in Kuwait. But he also said “even if Kuwait roads were the number one in the world, the bad driving habits need to change”.
